In the latest discourse surrounding the government shutdown, a recent poll highlights a widespread sentiment among Americans regarding accountability. It appears that blame is being attributed to a mix of Republicans, Democrats, and even President Trump, according to a report.
The survey posed the question of responsibility for the shutdown, revealing that 67% of respondents believe Republicans should bear a “substantial” share of the blame. In a similar vein, 63% assigned that level of responsibility to both Democrats and Trump.
When participants were asked who deserved a little blame, the figures were 16% for Republicans, 17% for Trump, and 21% for Democrats.
Concerns ran high among respondents about delays in essential services, particularly in social security and student aid. While 33% indicated they were not worried, a majority, 49%, expressed concern.
Diving deeper, the poll found that 39% of Democrats are very concerned about the impacts of the shutdown, contrasting sharply with only 12% of Republicans sharing that sentiment.
As the legislative standoff drags into its 10th day, leadership from both parties is exchanging blame. Notably, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem is set to release a video aimed at airport audiences nationwide, pointing fingers at Democrats for the ongoing shutdown.
In her message, Noem emphasized the priority of the Transportation Security Administration to maintain efficient airport operations, but highlighted that Congressional Democrats’ refusal to fund the government has compromised many TSA operations, causing staff to work without pay.
However, other polls suggest that dissatisfaction with the Republican Party and Trump’s approach to the shutdown is also prevalent. For instance, a CBS News poll revealed that 52% of those surveyed expressed dissatisfaction with how the government has handled the situation, while 39% directly attributed the shutdown to the government itself.
According to the same CBS News survey, 49% disapproved of the way Democrats are managing the shutdown, and 30% were openly critical of them.
An earlier poll from the Washington Post conducted on October 1, the very day the shutdown commenced, indicated that 47% of participants held Trump and Congressional Republicans accountable for the deadlock.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll was carried out between October 3-7, encompassing 1,154 respondents, with a margin of error standing at 3 percentage points.
