Gotham FC’s Ambitious Goals Amidst Rising Performance
This all started back on July 30. Gotham FC was in a less than stellar position, finishing eighth in the National Women’s Soccer League’s International League. Before a suspension, they had even dropped to tenth place, and their overall play wasn’t inspiring much confidence.
“We want to host a playoff game,” explained Gotham general manager Yael Apfelbach-West. She seemed optimistic, hinting at the possibility of finishing in the top four. “We’re incredibly ambitious. While there are teams that have had strong starts, we aim to be right there in the mix. If hosting a playoff game is realistic, we believe it’s achievable,” she added.
Interestingly, that goal now feels quite attainable.
Gotham (9-8-6) has pushed itself up to third place in the NWSL standings, with just three regular season matches left to play.
Even though there’s only a four-point gap between third and eighth place—and with a top-four finish still on the table—they can secure a playoff spot if they do well in their upcoming challenge.
Remarkably, Gotham boasts an unbeaten streak of 11 games across all competitions, matching a franchise record. This includes the last seven games in the NWSL (4 wins, 3 draws) and four group stage matches in the CONCACAF W Champions Cup, where they are the defending champions.
A fit and healthy Rose Lavelle is contributing significantly, and the offense has also benefitted from the addition of seven-figure scorer Jadyn Shaw. Their defense has been impressive too, allowing just four goals over 11 games in a span of 47 days.
Head coach Juan Carlos Amoros expressed confidence in his team’s upward trajectory. “I never doubted we would climb the standings,” he stated.
“We trusted our process,” Amoros noted. “This league is incredibly competitive, so staying true to your game plan and approach is crucial. It tends to pay off for us.”
However, Gotham’s current momentum faces a significant challenge this Saturday (5 p.m., ION) when they take on Kansas City, who recently claimed the NWSL Shield as the top team.
Kansas City is currently riding an impressive unbeaten streak of 16 games (14 wins, 2 draws) and hasn’t lost at home since last July.
The team, managed by former U.S. Women’s National Team coach Vlatko Andonovski, leads the league with the most goals scored (45), thanks in part to Golden Boot frontrunner and MVP candidate Temwa Chawinga, who has netted 14 goals. They’ve also conceded the fewest goals, standing at just 11.
It’ll be a tough test for Gotham, certainly a clash that any team with championship aspirations would look forward to as the postseason approaches.
“This matchup is definitely one any championship contender would want to see late in the year,” remarked Gotham veteran defender Emily Sonnett. “I hope for an exciting match, as it’ll offer a chance to gauge what to expect heading into the playoffs.”
