California Signs “Glock Ban” Bill
On Friday, California Governor Gavin Newsom approved Assembly Bill 1127, commonly referred to as the “Glock Ban” bill. This new regulation is set to start on July 1, 2026, prohibiting the sale of new Glock-branded pistols and similar models.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation highlighted that this legislation is a reaction to the rising illegal use of Glock switches, which are banned federally. These switches are attachments enabling Glock pistols to fire automatically.
Interestingly, the increasing popularity of Glock switches among gangs and criminals prompted this decision to restrict the sales of Glock firearms, despite their fame as one of the top-selling handguns.
In May 2025, reports indicated that the language of this bill was shaped by Democrats defining Glocks as “machine gun convertible pistols.”
The bill details clarify that a “machine gun convertible pistol” describes a semi-automatic handgun modified to fire automatically via certain attachments. It includes definitions for a “pistol converter,” which can be easily installed to alter the firing mechanism.
This legislative move effectively reclassifies new Glock pistols as “machine guns,” according to the provisions in the bill signed by Newsom.
