Trump fires dozens of CDC officials in shutdown layoffs: Reports

CDC Layoffs Amid Government Shutdown

On Friday, the Trump administration laid off numerous workers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as the ongoing government shutdown grips Washington. This reduction in staff at a key public health agency follows disruptive changes in leadership and new health guidance updates.

Among those terminated were employees from the Epidemic Intelligence Service, which looks into disease outbreaks. Other affected groups included the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases and fellows from the testing leadership department.

Many were notified of their layoffs via emails sent Friday evening, shortly after the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) advised federal agencies to prepare for workforce reductions due to the shutdown.

Additionally, personnel from the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report also faced layoffs as reported by various outlets.

Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) criticized the layoffs, claiming they’re part of a larger agenda. He expressed his dismay on social media, pointing out that the administration is making misleading claims about job creation while also manipulating data related to deaths linked to vaccines and scientific issues.

This move has stirred concern among other lawmakers. Earlier this year, Republicans voiced their discontent when HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dismissed former CDC Director Susan Monarrez just weeks after her appointment.

Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine) remarked on Monarrez’s talent and experience, noting the swift dismissal raised concerns about the nature of oversight in such matters.

Senator Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana), chair of the Senate Health Committee, also scrutinized the actions of Kennedy, linking them to several resignations among health officials. Cassidy accused Kennedy of undermining CDC recommendations in favor of policies lacking scientific backing.

During a hearing in August, he emphasized the significant consequences these decisions have on children’s health, urging that any meetings conducted by the New Vaccine Advisory Committee should be postponed until proper oversight is conducted.

Earlier in the year, President Kennedy replaced several board members with individuals opposing vaccines, which prompted considerable backlash.

The layoffs occurred on the 10th day of the government shutdown, coinciding with the Senate’s unsuccessful attempts to pass a continuing resolution to fund government operations through November 21. Many government sectors, including Education, Housing and Urban Development, the Environmental Protection Agency, and Homeland Security, are also experiencing staff reductions.
