Shocking Discovery in Family Reveals Dark Secrets of a Respected Doctor
Stacey Rutherford thought she had struck gold when she married Justin Rutherford. However, in 2021, everything changed when she uncovered a hidden camera in the bathroom of her parents’ home. This camera had been installed by her second husband, a well-regarded physician, recording without consent for years. What began as a personal violation spiraled into something far more sinister.
Justin, aged 36, eventually pleaded guilty to sexual abuse involving his step-son and another minor, leading to a conviction related to a murder-for-hire scheme. The unsettling life of this disgraced doctor is explored in the documentary series “Betrayal: Under His Eye,” now available on Hulu.
“There’s a lot of shame and guilt,” Rutherford shared. “As a mom, you think you know your kids, and it hurts to wonder how you missed it. Over time, those feelings evolve, but they linger.” After years of searching for love, she met Justin—a medical student—through a dating app in 2015. By the time they wed in 2019, Jeremy had established himself as a doctor and they welcomed two more kids into their family.
Tyler, Rutherford’s son, reflected, “Initially, I liked him a lot. Mom didn’t date much, but he actually took the time to engage with us, which was unique.” He seemed like a good partner for his mother.
Rutherford believed her family life was idyllic until the summer of 2021, when a friend of Tyler discovered a hidden camera disguised as a phone charger. The friend quickly alerted his mom, triggering a police investigation.
The documentary reveals that Justin captured thousands of images of individuals in vulnerable situations—showering, using the toilet, and changing clothes. During the investigation, the friend reported to the police an incident where Justin assaulted her during a sleepover. She revealed further trauma, stating she had been abused by her stepfather since the age of 11.
Tyler courageously spoke out, explaining that initially, he felt hesitant but knew he had to share his experience. “It felt burdensome,” he explained, “but the more I told my story, the easier it became.” He described grappling with guilt, revealing that he never truly hated Justin at first, a realization that came slowly over time.
“I had this moment—did I take away his life? But he stole so much from me,” Tyler recounted. Despite the abuse, he saw times when Justin acted like a loving father, complicating his emotions. “It’s hard to reconcile that love with the truth,” he added.
Looking back, Rutherford recognized that there were no obvious warning signs that suggested her husband’s hidden life. “I remember having fears about introducing anyone to my kids, but I thought he was safe,” she admitted. After Justin’s arrest, it was a painful awakening for their family, now intent on speaking out to protect others.
In the face of all these horrors, Justin fled to Europe but returned and was arrested upon landing in Virginia. While awaiting trial, he attempted to arrange for Tyler’s murder through a letter to a family friend, adding another layer to an already horrific saga.
In 2023, Justin received a sentence of 26 years and 10 months to 70 years in prison for several charges, including child rape and invasion of privacy. This was compounded by another five to 10 years for the murder conspiracy attempt.
Rutherford, reflecting on this nightmare, expressed a sense of deep loss. “I never realized he was capable of such evil, and it shattered our lives,” she lamented. “Now, I’m always looking over my shoulder, filled with fear.” She’s wrestling with numerous feelings, including guilt, saying, “As parents, we are supposed to shield our kids—and in this case, I failed.”
The struggle to process comforting memories now interwoven with trauma is ongoing. “I initially saw those moments as sweet, innocent family times, but now they just make me sick,” she said. However, she is determined to keep hold of their brighter memories while making sense of the darker ones.
Now, as a family, they have come forward after remaining silent for too long. They want to encourage other survivors to speak out and emphasize the importance of vigilance among parents. “Open lines of communication with your kids are vital,” Rutherford stressed. “Abuse can happen in even the most seemingly safe environments. I never expected this could be our story.”
The documentary “Betrayal: Under His Eye” serves not just as a chronicle, but also as a call to action for those who may share a similar experience, now streaming on Hulu.
