GM reintroduces Chevrolet Bolt EV for 2027 following battery fire recalls

Chevrolet Bolt Returns with Affordable Price Tag

General Motors is set to reintroduce a well-loved, budget-friendly electric vehicle after a pause in production. The Chevrolet Bolt will be making its return for the 2027 model year, starting at a price of $29,900, according to a press release from the company.

As the press release highlights, a more affordable LT version will follow later in the model year, with a starting MSRP of $28,995. Both electric vehicles include a destination and freight charge of $1,395, keeping their prices under $30,000.

GM has indicated that this revival will be limited in production, with customer deliveries commencing early next year. The new Bolt is expected to conform to Tesla’s North American charging standards, offering an impressive range of 455 miles.

Safety Concerns Lead to BMW’s Recall

In a separate issue, BMW is recalling nearly 200,000 vehicles due to a potential fire risk, advising owners to park their cars outdoors.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV initially launched in 2015, powered by a battery from LG as part of a collaboration. However, GM had to issue a recall in 2020 after several reports of vehicles catching fire.

Production of the Bolt EV ended in 2023, and in May 2024, GM, along with LG Energy Solutions, agreed to establish a $150 million fund aimed at helping Bolt EV owners affected by battery issues, as noted in court documents.

California EV Incentives Change

The relaunch of the Bolt comes at a time when rising tariffs and diminishing federal subsidies are squeezing consumers. It’s a bit concerning, really. The Volt aims to fill the gap as a practical, affordable long-range option, but it faces increasing challenges.

Scott Bell, GM’s vice president for Global Chevrolet, remarked that the Chevrolet Volt is the first affordable, mass-market long-range EV. He emphasized its price, versatility, and practicality have fostered a loyal customer base.

After halting production, GM listened to customer feedback expressing love for the Bolt. By popular demand, the vehicle is back for a limited period. The excitement is palpable, as potential buyers are encouraged not to miss out on this opportunity for an accessible EV.
