Jets’ Struggles Continue Despite Passing Game Woes
Even after what some might call the worst passing performance in franchise history, Aaron Glenn has decided against switching out quarterback Justin Fields.
Following the Jets’ 13-11 defeat to the Broncos in London, Glenn made it clear he’d stick with Fields as the starter. He seemed taken aback by questions about replacing him.
“What kind of question is that? Sometimes this league is just… up-and-down,” Glenn remarked. “Some players have off games, but that doesn’t mean we bench them. Come on, you know better than that.”
Fields, who inked a two-year, $40 million deal this offseason, has $30 million guaranteed.
In his postgame remarks, Glenn had just described the Jets’ passing game as “non-existent.” Fields only managed to complete 9 of 17 passes, totaling 45 yards without any touchdowns or interceptions.
He was sacked nine times, often due to holding the ball too long. This resulted in a net passing yardage of minus-10, marking the lowest figure for an NFL team in nearly three decades, and a new low for the Jets.
With 31 rushing yards, Fields wasn’t a significant threat on the ground either. As a team, the Jets amassed just 82 total offensive yards.
“It wasn’t enough, starting with me,” Fields acknowledged. “We’ve got to get the ball out faster. Their D-line is good and gets to the backfield quickly.”
Tyrod Taylor, Fields’ backup, had a start during Week 3 in a close 29-27 loss to the Buccaneers while Fields dealt with a concussion. Taylor connected on 26 of 29 passes for 197 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception.
The Jets also have rookie Brady Cook on their practice squad, who was signed as an undrafted free agent this offseason.
For the moment, it seems Glenn is not contemplating any changes. “It was uncomfortable; they really brought it to us. We all saw it… Our passing game was non-existent, and we need to improve. They did a great job pressuring our quarterback,” Glenn stated.
