Actress Diane Keaton dies at age 79
Diane Keaton, known for her iconic roles in “The Godfather” and “Annie Hall,” passed away at the age of 79.
Woody Allen, who had a significant personal and professional relationship with her, reflected on her absence, describing the world as a “worse place” without her. In a heartfelt essay, he shared his memories and thoughts about Keaton.
“It’s grammatically incorrect to say ‘most unique,’ but when it comes to Diane, the usual rules don’t apply,” he wrote. He added that her laughter and presence had a unique quality that made her irreplaceable.
Keaton and Allen first crossed paths while collaborating on “Play it Again, Sam” in the 1970s. Although their romance was brief, their friendship lasted over six decades. Allen recalled how taken he was by her beauty and charm, prompting him to question his feelings during their early interactions.
He mentioned that, perhaps only “God and Freud” could decipher why their romantic relationship didn’t endure. Reflecting on her passing, he expressed the sorrow of living in a world without her, though he found solace in her films and the memories they created together.
Keaton died on October 11 in California. A spokesperson for the actress indicated that details surrounding her passing would remain private, requesting privacy for her family during this trying time. A friend of hers characterized her decline as abrupt and unexpected, especially given her strong demeanor throughout her life.
In her final months, Keaton had only her closest family by her side, keeping her situation away from public scrutiny. Her enduring legacy includes numerous collaborations with Allen, featuring in eight of his films together, highlighting their creative bond.
Allen remarked that among all opinions regarding his films, Keaton’s was the only one that truly mattered. If she appreciated his work, he considered it a success; conversely, her critical feedback was pivotal in his creative process.
