Keira Knightley Addresses JK Rowling’s Trans Views

Actress Keira Knightley has chosen not to criticize JK Rowling’s opinions on transgender issues, emphasizing the need for respect towards differing viewpoints.

In a conversation about joining the Audible cast for Harry Potter: Full Cast Audio Edition, where she voices Professor Umbridge, Knightley mentioned she was “not aware” that some fans had decided to boycott the series due to Rowling’s statements.

“You know, I think we’re living in a time now where we have to think about how we’re going to live together, right?” Knightley shared. “And we all have very different opinions. I hope we can all be respectful.”

Since 2020, Rowling has faced significant backlash for her comments on transgender ideology, with some labeling her as transphobic. In light of her views, former Harry Potter stars Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint have distanced themselves and expressed support for transgender rights. Recently, Watson attempted to clarify her stance, saying, “I hope I can continue to love people who don’t necessarily share my views.”

She continued, “I really don’t believe that having an experience like that and continuing to have love and support and an opinion means that you can’t and don’t value Joe or anyone else you’ve had a personal experience with.” There’s a complexity to it, really. “My deepest desire is for people who don’t agree with me to love me, and I hope that I can continue to love people who don’t necessarily share the same views.”

Rowling later referred to Watson as “ignorant” on social media.

The author stated, “I am not obligated to obtain eternal consent from the actors who once played the characters I created. This idea is as ridiculous as checking with my boss at 21 about what opinion I should have these days.” She added, “Emma Watson and her co-stars have every right to embrace their gender identity ideology, which is legally protected. I don’t want to see them lose their jobs or face violence because of it.”
