Titans management discusses the reasons behind Brian Callahan's dismissal — with the owner absent

Titans Part Ways with Coach Amid Struggles

Chad Brinker, the head of football operations for the Titans, repeatedly emphasized a key point regarding the team’s decision to fire their coach this season. “We felt now was the right time to make a change,” Brinker stated on Monday after the dismissal of Brian Callahan. “We wanted this football team to grow, and that’s where we are right now. We just haven’t seen enough growth from this football team. We’re at 1-5, and we’ve got to improve.”

However, it raised eyebrows that Brinker, rather than owner Amy Adams Strunk, was the one delivering this news and handling questions about such a significant decision.

The situation became a bit uncomfortable during the press conference. Brinker, positioned next to general manager Mike Borgonzi, did most of the speaking while mentioning that the owner was “at home.”

“I’m here on her behalf,” he noted.

Fans hoping for insight into the team’s future and why Strunk, who had previously fired Mike Vrabel after the 2023 season, chose to let go of another coach could only hope the organization fully grasped what “growth” entails.

Brinker added that the Titans, particularly rookie quarterback Cam Ward, are not demonstrating the expected progress. After finishing last season at 3-14, the team has only managed to secure one win against a loss to the Raiders, which ended 20-10.

It wasn’t a great day for Ward, who committed three turnovers, and Coach Callahan’s critique post-game hinted that the performance was concerning. “I’m incredibly disappointed with this result,” Callahan expressed, “We came into the game feeling optimistic. It’s unfortunate we didn’t score and end up losing. Everyone has to improve, including Cam.” He added, “While it’s not solely about him, he’s part of the solution. We need to see better football overall.”

Now, Callahan’s tenure ends after just 23 games, and the Titans will be looking toward former Chargers coach Mike McCoy, who has an offensive background, as the new interim coach. For McCoy to remain in the role long-term, it’s crucial that he helps Ward perform at a higher level.

So far, Ward has thrown for 1,101 yards, accumulating three touchdowns and four interceptions. “That’s a significant part of it. We drafted Cam Ward No. 1 overall,” Brinker acknowledged. “His development is crucial, so those factors are heavy on our minds.”

However, if McCoy turns out to be merely a stopgap, the Titans may find themselves searching for yet another coach, particularly as Strunk has shown little tolerance for losing. She parted ways with Vrabel after consecutive losing seasons, let go of general manager Ran Carson after two years, and now Callahan after just 23 games.

This coaching role is not what most prefer—there’s usually a desire for time to build a team—but it seems this isn’t how the Titans operate.

“This job would be fascinating,” Brinker commented. “There’s no doubt about that.”

Ultimately, the future will depend on who the franchise believes can lead them toward growth.

“I think there are opportunities for growth across the roster, whether it’s offense, defense, or special teams. We need to see more from our players and our coaches, and we must get better,” Brinker concluded. “There are standards we aim to uphold, and we have not met those standards.”
