Ilhan Omar on Ceasefire, Resists Credit for Trump
Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, declined to acknowledge President Donald Trump’s role in achieving a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas during an event on Tuesday. She expressed gratitude for the cessation of violence but refrained from attributing the success to the president.
When a Minnesota Public Radio reporter inquired if Trump deserved recognition for recent developments in the Middle East, Omar replied, “I’m really happy to see such a breakthrough, but I’m hesitant to congratulate anyone too optimistically until there is lasting peace.” This sentiment reflects a cautious approach to the situation, emphasizing a need for genuine, ongoing peace.
Omar elaborated on her perspective, highlighting that true peace means more than just a pause in hostilities. She noted, “It means no more bombs being dropped on innocent children, no more destruction of infrastructure, and an apparent accountability for the genocide committed by Israel against the people of Gaza.” She also called for the release of all hostages held by different parties, not just those held by Hamas.
Despite Omar’s stance, some prominent Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, acknowledged Trump’s contributions to the ceasefire, which led to the safe return of 20 hostages from Hamas captivity. Schumer expressed notable relief and commended the collaborative efforts of hostages’ families and Trump’s administration.
Other political figures, such as former President Bill Clinton and former Vice President Kamala Harris, had similarly complimentary remarks about Trump’s role in the peace process. Harris noted the contributions of various parties involved without directly linking them to Trump, signaling a broader acknowledgment of collaborative efforts in achieving the ceasefire.
In expressing his views, New York mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani emphasized the emotional impact of the ceasefire on both Israelis and Palestinians. He remarked on the significance of hostages being reunited with their families and the stark contrast in Gaza without ongoing violence. Mamdani reiterated the necessity of striving for a future grounded in justice, free from occupation and ensuring safety and dignity for all.
