CJ Gardner-Johnson’s Tough Season Continues

CJ Gardner-Johnson has had a rough run lately. The safety was released by the Ravens on Tuesday, marking his second cut this season.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the parting was described as a mutual decision. His agent, Kevin Connor, shared details about the split.

This development follows the Ravens’ surprising 1-5 start, as they’re entering a bye week after trading another safety, Alohi Gilman, to the Chargers last week.

“After the Ravens traded a safety, we were looking for a clearer path to play,” Conner said.

Gardner-Johnson, age 27, was previously let go by the Texans this season after being traded to Houston from the Eagles in the offseason.

Reports suggest that friction behind the scenes played a role in his departure. Gardner-Johnson had expressed dissatisfaction with his role, seeking more opportunities for blitzing, and even hinted at wanting a trade, according to KPRC’s Aaron Wilson.

At this point, it’s uncertain whether any teams are actively pursuing Gardner-Johnson, especially since he hasn’t stepped onto the field in Baltimore.

Before his release from the Texans, he had tallied 11 tackles in three games. Throughout his career, Gardner-Johnson has faced his share of controversies on and off the field. Last season, for example, he was ejected from a game after receiving two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and having an incident involving a fan.

Interestingly, he made headlines for posting a meme that poked fun at Travis Kelsey and Taylor Swift after the Eagles triumphed over the Chiefs in the previous Super Bowl.

Given his track record, it might complicate any potential interest from teams, though it’s still unknown if any have reached out since his latest release. Gardner-Johnson has previously played for the Saints and Lions in his seven-year career.
