Musk's Boring Company to Construct 'Dubai Loop' in the UAE

Dubai Metro Transit System Planned by Elon Musk’s Boring Company

Elon Musk’s Boring Company is on track to develop a metro transit system in Dubai, known as the Dubai Loop, which is anticipated to begin operating in 2026, according to UAE officials.

Omar Al Olama, the Minister of Artificial Intelligence in the UAE, shared that the Dubai Loop is set to become functional by the second quarter of 2026. This initiative, a collaboration between Musk’s Tunnel Project and the UAE government, aims to alleviate the growing traffic issues in Dubai.

The initial phase will feature a 17-kilometer (10.6-mile) underground tunnel capable of transporting 20,000 passengers per hour, based on the preliminary plans released by The Boring Company earlier this year. Al Olama mentioned that this first section is merely the start, with ambitions for “multiple loops” in the future, though no timeline for further developments was mentioned.

This project reflects Dubai’s ongoing attempts to tackle increasing congestion linked to population growth. The city has been investigating a range of innovative solutions, including air taxi services by firms like Joby Aviation and other international competitors. The UAE has positioned itself as a progressive hub for cutting-edge technologies, like flying cars and AI bots, benefiting from lenient regulations and forward-looking expansion strategies.

If the Dubai Loop succeeds, it could mark a significant achievement for The Boring Company, which has faced challenges in fulfilling its commitments. Presently, its only operable public loop is in Las Vegas, relying on human-driven Tesla vehicles to ferry passengers between stations. It’s still uncertain whether the Dubai system will utilize Tesla vehicles or explore alternate transportation methods previously suggested, such as vacuum pods or autonomous vehicles.

Challenges have already emerged with The Boring Company’s Las Vegas Loop, which has experienced some difficulties since its inception.

The Las Vegas Convention Center Loop Tunnel, unveiled at CES 2022, received criticism, with some branding it a “death trap.” Footage from the tunnel showed traffic jams without visible emergency exits, although The Boring Company asserts that there are several exits. Online reactions highlighted safety concerns, with one user remarking, “If the car goes up in flames, people will die.” Another commented on the potential hazards, prompting worries about what would happen in emergencies.

The Dubai Loop is just one of several initiatives Musk’s company is pursuing in the Gulf region. Other projects include expanding Starlink satellite internet services and proposing Boring Company tunnels and robotaxis in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, the UAE has been chosen as the first site outside the US for OpenAI’s Stargate project, which plans for a 5 GW AI data center in collaboration with Oracle Corp. and other partners.
