Strikes and Protests Disrupt Travel in Belgium

Nationwide strikes and protests against Belgium’s proposed reform plans created significant disorder at major airports on Tuesday. According to reports, local law enforcement deployed tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds.

Altercations emerged between protesters and police, who were met with chants and music, as demonstrators expressed their opposition to cuts in social welfare. The protests, notably large, brought traffic in central Brussels to a standstill and led to the cancellation of numerous flights.

While organizers claim attendance exceeded 150,000, police put the number at around 80,000.

Police were seen pursuing protestors who demonstrated in various locations between Gare du Nord and Gare du Sud. Officers, some identified by red armbands rather than uniforms, restrained individuals with plastic ties.

At one moment, officers on bicycles sought refuge inside a nearby hotel to escape a large gathering of protesters.

Reportedly, around 25 people faced detainment for starting fires on busy roads, further escalating tensions. The protests were organized by the country’s three largest trade unions.

Brussels Airport issued warnings to travelers about potential flight cancellations due to significant disruptions expected on October 14, tied to industrial action involving security staff. The airport advised that operations might be severely affected.

Charleroi Airport, another significant travel hub in Belgium, also had to cancel flights because of staffing issues. Reports suggest that Brussels Airport is currently in discussions with airlines to encourage them to refrain from scheduling flights on the day of the protests.

Following the flight cancellations, Brussels Airlines announced it would be unable to operate its complete range of departures and would also delay many arrivals.

Authorities indicated that Wednesday was likely to be very busy as travelers adjust to the disruption.
