Senate Republicans’ Ninth Attempt to Reopen Government Fails

Senate Republicans have once again failed to reopen the government, marking their ninth unsuccessful attempt. Senate Democrats, it seems, are leaning towards delaying any movement until next week.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and his Democratic colleagues blocked another House-approved continuing resolution aimed at extending expired Obamacare subsidies. They argue that without negotiations with Congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump about extending tax credits, they can’t support Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s bid to reopen the government.

Funding Battles Intensify as Shutdown Stagnates

Democrats stress that if Congress doesn’t act by November 1, which is when the Affordable Care Act takes effect, Americans dependent on subsidies might face rising health insurance premiums. Trump’s refusal to work with Republicans has now extended the government shutdown into its third week, risking a missed deadline for subsidy negotiations.

“With an open election cycle on the horizon, Republicans can’t afford to gamble here,” Schumer remarked. “This is happening now. We are in a medical crisis.”

However, Republicans suggested that Democrats are opting to wait for the “No Kings” protests scheduled for Saturday in Washington, D.C., before they seek solutions to the shutdown.

Thune acknowledged ongoing discussions to resolve the issue but estimated that Senate Democrats wouldn’t take any serious steps until after Saturday, which is quite close to the upcoming election.

Democrats Block Republican Efforts To End Shutdown

“I think Democrats are really boxed in right now,” Thune said. “We’ll have to get through Saturday. It’s a crucial moment for them, but hopefully their conversations will become more constructive. This has to end.”

Senator Mike Rounds, who is engaging with both Republicans and Democrats on the Obamacare matter, mentioned he probably won’t be involved this week due to the planned protest.

“Once that’s past, I hope they’ll reevaluate the consequences of keeping the government shut down,” he reflected, noting that discussions have already occurred about expiring grants prior to the shutdown.

Shutdown Impacts on Healthcare and Air Travel

Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso expressed concern about the ramifications of a prolonged shutdown on air travel, highlighting that air traffic controllers might have to work without pay if it continues.

He pointed out that Senate Democrats, led by Schumer, seem to be influenced by the more radical factions within their party. “They’ll be in Washington this weekend,” Barrasso noted, adding that it’s troubling they admit their shutdown strategy won’t shift until there are dire consequences.

“Innocent people are caught in the middle of this dangerous game,” he warned, pointing to the high stakes involved.
