The heartbroken family of an 11-year-old boy from upstate New York, who was tragically shot by another young boy, has come forward publicly, expressing their support for a statewide anti-gun violence initiative.
In a statement, relatives of the boy, identified as Matthew DeGroat, said, “We want to extend our gratitude to the City of Newburgh and all law enforcement officials involved in capturing the shooter.” This was their first public comment regarding the heartbreaking incident that occurred on October 9, prompting the closure of a local school.
They added, “A huge thank you goes to the SNUG Group, its community partners, and everyone who has been praying for us during this difficult time. Matthew may not be here anymore, but he will always be remembered.”
SNUG stands for “Should Never Use Guns,” a program aimed at gun control that was launched in 2009, receiving funding from private donations and the state’s Department of Criminal Justice.
Matthew’s family made their statement following the incident in which police found him deceased at a residence on North Miller Street at 8:17 a.m.
A 13-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Matthew’s death. Authorities suggested this was an act of revenge related to an earlier shooting involving Matthew’s older brother.
Police also disclosed they found an unlicensed handgun at the scene.
According to Orange County District Attorney David Hoover, there were four individuals nearby when the shooting took place.
The suspected shooter, who remains unnamed due to his age, is currently being held in a juvenile facility without bail while awaiting further legal proceedings.
