Islanders Make Lineup Changes Ahead of Game Against Oilers
Maxim Tsyplakov, who logged just 6 minutes and 43 seconds during the recent game against the Jets, will not play when the Islanders face Edmonton on Thursday. Instead, Kyle MacLean is set to join the lineup as a fourth-line center for the first time this season, while Casey Cizikas will likely move to the wing.
Coach Patrick Roy commented on the changes, saying, “Sometimes you make a change for the sake of making a change. Kyle hasn’t played this year, so we felt it was time for him to get his chance. He adds energy and speed, which is something we’re looking for.”
Roy also mentioned that Tsyplakov has specific areas he needs to work on and noted their discussions about it. “He’s going to put in the effort to improve, and I’m confident he’ll be ready when he returns,” Roy added.
Tsyplakov, who experienced a couple of healthy scratches last season, has expressed a desire to enhance both his defensive skills and offensive contributions. He’s yet to score this season, and his playing time has been limited, averaging less than 12 minutes in the first two games.
Feeling disappointed about his current situation, Tsyplakov stated, “We just need to focus on the details. Tactics are crucial—defensive zone, neutral zone, offensive zone. We could use more of that.”
In goal, David Rittich will make his season debut on Thursday, while Roy indicated that Ilya Sorokin is expected to start on Saturday against Ottawa. Rittich had three preseason appearances, recording an .860 save percentage after stopping 49 of 57 shots.
Ryan Purock addressed the Islanders’ defensive struggles, noting that the issues stem from details rather than overall structure. “There are times we could be more aggressive with the puck, and other moments where we need to be more secure. Protecting each other in different areas on the ice is essential,” he explained. “Sometimes we neglect certain areas, and that’s costing us. It’s just a slight adjustment in mindset that’s needed.”
In an injury update, Oilers defenseman Jake Wollman is expected to miss the game due to an upper-body injury.
