Mel Gibson Begins Filming “The Resurrection of the Christ” Two Decades After ‘The Passion’

Mel Gibson’s Sequel to The Passion of Christ in the Works

Twenty-one years ago, an independent film shattered box office expectations. It raked in an impressive $1 million worldwide, making it one of the most successful indie films ever. That film, as many will recognize, is Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ.

As of October 15, 2025, fans are eagerly anticipating the sequel, which is currently in production. This new installment, titled The Resurrection of the Christ, began filming at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios, the same place where the original was shot back in 2004. In a twist that surprised many, it’s revealed that this sequel will come in two parts with a fresh cast. When questioned about these choices, Gibson mentioned that the hefty expense of CGI work, particularly for de-aging, played a key role in this decision.

The project is being produced by Bruce and Davey (Icon Productions) alongside Lionsgate. Part 1 is set to release on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, followed by Part 2 on May 6, 2027. While the original film captured the final hours of Jesus’ life, the sequels are said to explore the events three days post-crucifixion.

There’s been considerable buzz surrounding the film, especially given its strong Christian themes. Some individuals have expressed outrage over Gibson’s decision to cast Jaako Otonen in place of the original Jesus actor, Jim Caviezel. Others have criticized the project as sacrilegious. Yet, amidst this backlash, Gibson remains committed to delivering an ambitious sequel. He asserts that it’s authentic to its gospel origins, emphasizing the importance of maintaining belief in a changing world.

Followers of The Passion of the Christ anticipate that the film will depict the crucifixion in a way that is both admirable and contentious. The development of The Resurrection has taken multiple years. During a conversation, Gibson noted that the story extends beyond just three days, focusing on the spiritual journey following Jesus’ death. “It’s not solely about the event; it’s what transpired spiritually,” he remarked.

Will this film become the highest-grossing movie in history? Only time will reveal that. Nonetheless, one thing is clear: the significance of Jesus’ death and resurrection continues to resonate today. Nearly two decades after The Passion, believers are eager for a portrayal of a pivotal moment in Christian faith: the Resurrection. More than that, it’s a reminder of our future hope. “He’s not here. He has risen,” as noted in Matthew 28:6.

And just as He has promised, “there are many rooms in the Father’s house,” as mentioned in John 14:2-3. I hope that resonates with you.
