Darius McCrary’s Court Appearance After Arrest

Darius McCrary, known for his role on “Family Matters,” made his first court appearance following his recent arrest earlier this month.

The 49-year-old actor represented himself during the hearing after being taken into custody on Sunday, October 5, due to a felony warrant related to a child support dispute. Video footage from the hearing shows McCrary repeatedly stating, “I’m here for a special appearance,” which seemed to confuse the judge.

When McCrary was asked who he was appearing for, he reiterated, “Special appearance for Darius McCrary. I’m here. I’m here.” The judge then assigned a public defender to the case, citing McCrary’s difficulty in understanding and evaluating the legal proceedings.

Background and Current Status

McCrary was denied bail and agreed to be extradited to Michigan, with authorities having 30 days to transfer him from the San Diego jail where he has been held since his arrest.

His attorney, Ann Barlow, explained that if he isn’t extradited, a court date is set for November 14 in San Diego. “We are preparing to challenge Oakland County because they have repeatedly neglected Mr. McCrary’s due process rights,” she stated.

McCrary’s arrest occurred near the U.S.-Mexico border by U.S. Border Patrol after he missed a court appearance in Michigan related to child support.

Details from the Hearing

During a court session on October 15, prosecutors noted that this marks McCrary’s third arrest on similar charges, following incidents in 2015 and 2023. He had previously been extradited from Los Angeles to Michigan in 2023.

The arraignment featured conflicting statements regarding McCrary’s presence in Mexico. Prosecutors claimed he was engaged in a real estate deal, while his defense argued he was with a group focused on building homes in Tijuana, a project Barlow had earlier discussed.

Barlow also mentioned that McCrary missed his court date due to being infected with COVID-19, which prevented him from checking his post office box. Unfortunately, he received court notices that allowed only three days for compliance.

Moreover, he reportedly informed the court promptly about his COVID-19 diagnosis with a doctor’s note.

He is widely recognized for his role as Eddie Winslow on the beloved sitcom “Family Matters,” a role he played for 215 episodes from 1989 to 1998.
