Understanding Pneumonia
Pneumonia is an infection in the lungs that can be triggered by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, causing inflammation in lung tissue and potentially leading to fluid and pus build-up. According to Dr. Mark Siegel from NYU Langone Health, the risk of developing pneumonia can vary based on a person’s underlying health conditions and immune strength.
Types of Pneumonia
Most community-acquired pneumonia cases are either bacterial or viral. Bacterial pneumonia tends to be more severe and can arise from infections like streptococcus pneumoniae, which is among the most common culprits. This bacteria can lead to serious health outcomes, including a mortality rate that concerns medical professionals.
On the other hand, viral pneumonia may be associated with the flu, colds, and even COVID-19, usually resolving without extensive medical intervention. However, there are cases where pneumonia can escalate, leading to severe complications.
Some fungi and protozoa are also less frequent causes of pneumonia, with a mix of atypical bacteria being involved as well. Early diagnosis is crucial, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, seniors, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The CDC advises those aged 50 and older to consider getting vaccinated against pneumonia.
Dr. Siegel pointed out that vaccination can protect against multiple strains, emphasizing the importance of proactive care.
