Texas Senate Race Heats Up As Cornyn Faces Challenges
The Texas Senate race is starting to intensify, particularly with Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) facing off against Republican primary contender Wesley Hunt. Hunt has raised concerns about Cornyn’s pardons, an allegation that Cornyn’s team firmly disputes.
This primary, like many others nationwide, is shaped by a clash between MAGA supporters and traditional Republican figures. Hunt and Attorney General Ken Paxton are presenting themselves as conservative alternatives to Cornyn, who has at times supported immigration amnesty—a stance that’s not particularly favored by the MAGA faction.
Certain reports indicate that Cornyn has received a low rating for his immigration stance. For instance, in 2018, he voted for an omnibus spending bill that allowed an increase in H-2B visas. He also supported an amendment that would have extended amnesty to nearly 1.8 million DACA-eligible individuals, although that proposal didn’t pass.
In previous legislative sessions, Cornyn has pushed for various measures that critics label as incentives for illegal immigration, including a temporary guest worker program. His support for the controversial Gang of Eight amnesty bill and comments from 2016 calling Trump’s border wall “naive” have also drawn scrutiny.
Hunt has stated, “It’s no surprise that John Cornyn voted to grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens. His actions show he has supported open borders, which has only led to chaos in Texas.” He suggests that Cornyn is trying to pretend he’s aligned with Trump while contradicting that sentiment during his tenure.
Paxton echoed similar sentiments, criticizing Cornyn’s approach to border security, particularly emphasizing his contradictory past statements regarding Trump’s wall. “No American ‘Republican’ has destroyed our sovereignty more than John Cornyn,” Paxton remarked, hinting that voters are aware of Cornyn’s perceived inconsistencies.
In response, Cornyn’s campaign has denied these allegations, with a senior adviser claiming that the senator has staunchly supported Trump and has never backed pardons. They highlighted the substantial federal funds Cornyn helped secure for border states.
This race is not isolated; conservatives in different states are similarly distinguishing themselves from what they consider RINOs. For example, in Kentucky, Nate Morris criticized his opponent for supporting amnesty, reinforcing the ongoing ideological battle within the party.
Morris stated, “We know this goes against the essence of the MAGA movement: strong borders and zero tolerance for illegal immigration.” His comments reflect a growing demand among conservatives for a strict stance on immigration as the primaries approach.
