Ex-national security adviser John Bolton charged by federal grand jury

John Bolton Indicted on Multiple Charges

A grand jury convened on Wednesday to deliberate over potential charges against John Bolton, who served as President Trump’s national security adviser during his initial term and has often critiqued the president. The outcome of their deliberations was revealed on Thursday afternoon.

According to the Justice Department, Bolton, now 76, faces an indictment consisting of 18 counts related to the mishandling of classified information, eight counts for transmitting national defense information, and 10 counts for unlawful retention of sensitive information.

Attorney General Pam Bondi expressed in a statement, “Every American deserves a measure of justice. Anyone who abuses their position of power and endangers the security of our country will be held accountable. No one is above the law.”

Reports suggest that the grand jury was examining allegations that Bolton shared sensitive classified documents via a private email server. A Justice Department official described the case against him as “rigorous.”

Bolton is accused of forwarding confidential materials and maintaining “diary-like notes” using a personal AOL email account during his tenure in office. This indictment represents a significant development in a prolonged investigation, which could lead to severe repercussions for him.

Furthermore, a heavily redacted search warrant affidavit indicated that the FBI searched Bolton’s residence in Maryland this past August, citing suspicions of “hacking of Bolton’s AOL account by a foreign entity.” Little detail has been disclosed regarding the specifics of the hack or the identity of the foreign entity involved.

If found guilty, Bolton could face a maximum of 10 years in prison for each charge laid against him.

In response to the indictment, President Trump commented, “This is the first time you’ve said it to me, but I think he’s, you know, a bad person. I think he’s a bad person — yes, he’s a bad person. It’s too bad. But that’s how it is, right? That’s how it is.”
