Michael Lombardi from UNC visited Saudi Arabia for a possible PIF investment.

According to a report, Michael Lombardi, the general manager of the University of North Carolina football team, visited Saudi Arabia prior to the season to explore potential investment opportunities with the country’s Public Investment Fund.

This trip was not sanctioned by the university, but UNC’s vice president for public affairs, Stoyer, indicated that it occurred “at the invitation of Saudi Arabia.” The visit was described as an “exploratory fundraising trip,” which ultimately did not result in any agreements, and was funded by the Saudi government rather than university resources.

The Public Investment Fund, which has assets estimated at $925 billion, owns various sports entities including the LIV Golf Tour and Newcastle United FC, and has collaborations with both the WTA and ATP Tennis Tours. It also sponsors F1 events. Additionally, the fund has invested in Electronic Arts, known for popular games like the Madden NFL series and the College Football series.

Critics have pointed out that such investments may be attempts to improve the international image of Saudi Arabia through sports.

The revelation of this trip adds another layer of complexity to what has already been a challenging year for the university’s football program.

Coach Bill Belichick’s arrival at UNC in December 2024 generated significant excitement following his long career with the New England Patriots, where he won six Super Bowls alongside Hall of Famer Tom Brady. He recommended Lombardi for the GM position, calling their reunion “a dream come true.”

However, that dream quickly soured, as the season began with a disappointing home loss to TCU on September 1, with Belichick’s girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, among those witnessing the team’s 48-14 defeat.

Despite a brief recovery with wins against Charlotte and Richmond, the team’s performance again faltered, suffering heavy defeats, including a 34-9 loss to UCF and a 38-10 setback against Clemson, which prompted some fans to exit early.

The criticism of Belichick’s coaching continued, with parents of players describing the environment as “toxic.” One source remarked, “It’s an unstructured mess. There’s no culture, no organization. It’s a complete disaster.”

As speculation grows around the possibility of Belichick leaving, UNC has issued a statement affirming their support for the coach. Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham emphasized, “Coach Belichick has the full support of the athletics department and the university.”

Belichick himself has made it clear that he is not planning to leave anytime soon, stating, “Any reports that I’m looking to be acquired or that I’m leaving are completely false. There’s no truth to any of that. We’re happy to be here. We’re working toward a goal. We believe very much in the process. We just have to keep working and grinding. That’s exactly what we’re doing.”

The Tar Heels, currently holding a record of 2-3, are set to face Cal, who has a 4-2 record, on Friday night.
