Medicaid Payments to Undocumented Immigrants Under Scrutiny
Dr. Mehmet Oz, the head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, revealed on Thursday that an internal review discovered over $1 billion in Medicaid funds allocated to illegal immigrants across various states. He noted that efforts are underway by the Trump administration to address this issue.
“Democrats have been downplaying concerns regarding Medicaid funding for illegal immigrants for a significant amount of time,” Oz commented during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.”
The conversation around healthcare for undocumented immigrants has contributed to the ongoing government shutdown, which is now in its third week. Republicans have accused Democrats of misusing federal healthcare funds while hindering moves aimed at reducing government spending.
Oz pointed out that the investigation by his agency is still in its early stages and the figures released so far only reflect a limited number of states.
“In states like Texas and Florida, where many residents contribute to federal taxes, their money seems to be redirected to states like California that offer extensive benefits to illegal immigrants,” he said.
“We are actively looking into this and will continue monitoring the situation nationwide.”
On the other hand, Democrats remain firm in their stance regarding government funding, insisting they will not support any funding legislation unless it includes an extended provision for Affordable Care Act subsidies, which are set to expire in 2025. They argue that without immediate action, millions could face increased premiums when the public offering kicks off in November.
Despite this, the White House has asserted that the Democratic proposal would allocate billions for Medicaid coverage aimed at undocumented individuals.
“Their plan would amount to nearly $200 billion over the next decade on healthcare for illegal immigrants and other noncitizens, which is enough to fund the entire Children’s Health Insurance Program,” the White House stated in a public communication.
Oz described the situation as a moral dilemma, emphasizing that taxpayer funds should not go toward healthcare for those who do not contribute to the system.
“We can’t simply allow able-bodied illegal immigrants in various states to do as they please,” he remarked.
“If they wish to access these services, they need to contribute.”
Although federal regulations currently bar illegal immigrants from enrolling in Medicaid, some states have exploited loopholes to extend certain Medicaid-funded health benefits to them.
Oz indicated that his office is investigating ways to close these loopholes.
“We will ensure that this money is redirected back to federal coffers. The president remains committed to safeguarding American taxpayers,” he stated.
