Charles Leno Jr. steps away from the NFL to prioritize family after his wife's heartbreaking passing.

For the last ten years, Charles Leno Jr. has been heavily focused on his career in the NFL. However, he’s now stepping into a new phase of life, one that brings him closer to his family.

In his retirement announcement made on Tuesday, Leno spoke about a deeply personal tragedy—his wife Jennifer’s miscarriage. This date also marked two years since they lost their daughter, Paytin. “On October 14, 2023, my wife Jennifer and I experienced an unimaginable heartbreak. We lost our precious daughter, Paytin, our fourth baby girl,” the 34-year-old shared in an Instagram post.

Leno reflected on how that day completely altered his perspective on life. “It changed everything for me. It changed the way I looked at life, the way I lived myself, and most importantly what was most important to me,” he said. He realized that his dedication to football was faltering. “That’s when I knew I was done with football—not physically, but mentally and emotionally. My priorities, my passion, my purpose have changed. My heart now belongs completely to my family. And I knew that one day, when the time was right, I would make it official.”

He described fatherhood as the most significant role he has taken on, mentioning that he and his wife have three daughters. In his message to them, he emphasized the importance of their joy in his life, saying, “Your laughter, love, and strength have given me purpose beyond football. I want to be there for every moment, every milestone, and every memory that’s to come.”

Leno expressed gratitude toward his wife, calling her his “rock.” Drafted by the Chicago Bears in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft, he played seven seasons with them before moving to Washington.
