Trump criticizes Grassley as blue slip tradition hinders US attorney confirmations

President Donald Trump is expressing frustration with Chuck Grassley, the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, regarding the ongoing unconfirmation of several U.S. attorney nominations. He argues that this stalemate stems from Grassley’s adherence to the “blue slip” tradition.

This tradition essentially gives local state senators a say in blocking nominees they disapprove of. Trump stated, “I have eight outstanding U.S. attorneys, well-respected in their fields, who are unable to take office in key states simply because they align with the Republican Party. The Democrats have convinced Chuck Grassley to uphold this outdated blue slip practice, which is stopping qualified individuals from stepping into important roles,” according to a post he shared on Truth Social.

In another post, he elaborated, stating that “a blue slip means that if you’re a Republican president and the state you’re appointing federal prosecutors in has just one Democratic senator, then you can forget about getting Republican confirmations.” He referred to this process as a “disaster,” stressing that his eight candidates would be unable to serve the constituents who overwhelmingly supported him.

This isn’t the first time Trump has raised concerns about the blue slip tradition. Earlier this year, he urged Grassley to enable strong Republican candidates to assume powerful positions, telling him to stand up to Democrats who often take a hard stance.

A representative for Grassley responded to inquiries about Trump’s comments, citing a previous post where the senator reiterated that nominees lacking blue slips wouldn’t receive sufficient votes for confirmation in the Senate. Grassley maintained that during his tenure, he aims to ensure Trump’s nominees succeed rather than fail.

In a separate public statement, Grassley mentioned that the century-old blue slip tradition allows home-state senators to provide their input on nominees, suggesting that the Republicans have successfully blocked various liberal appointments during the Biden administration, enabling Trump to fill judicial vacancies with more conservative choices.
