Concerns Rise Among House Republicans Over Gun Owners Amid Government Shutdown
A cohort of 30 House Republicans is expressing their worries about the impact of the ongoing government shutdown on gun owners nationwide.
Representative Ben Kline from Virginia spearheaded a letter on Thursday directed at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). In this correspondence, he urged the agency’s acting director to redefine certain positions as essential workers. The lawmakers highlighted that the current situation is causing significant delays in processing applications for various firearms-related items.
“Due to this Democratic-led shutdown, ATF, like other federal agencies, is running with reduced staff. While Democrats are focused on advocating for benefits for illegal immigrants, the constitutional rights of American citizens are being compromised,” the letter, which was first reported by FOX News Digital, stated.
“Under federal law, full exercise of Second Amendment rights necessitates federal involvement. This situation isn’t what the Framers envisioned, but it is unfortunately the reality we face,” the letter continued.
As the shutdown has now reached its 17th day, there remains a stalemate between Democrats and Republicans regarding the allocation of federal funds.
The shutdown has led to thousands of federal employees being furloughed and a suspension of numerous government services. An ongoing assessment of which workers are deemed “essential” and must continue working—albeit with limited or no pay—while others are entirely shut down, is underway.
Many non-law enforcement ATF employees have been furloughed, which has resulted in delays for new and renewal applications for civilian federal firearms licenses.
“Americans currently lack access to widely available NFA-regulated firearms and safety equipment,” the letter emphasized.
In their letter, House Republicans pointed out that ATF’s furloughing of National Firearms Act (NFA) application reviewers means Americans are unable to obtain certain regulated firearms and safety gear, such as short-barreled rifles and silencers, due to the absence of staff to process applications.
They highlighted that the approval of NFA applications is tied to the responsibilities of the President, who holds the duty of protecting the Constitution, including the Second Amendment.
Moreover, the Republicans warned that the suspension of processes during the shutdown could threaten the safety and property of citizens, referencing similar situations during past shutdowns when NFA applications were not processed.
“During these indefinite delays, the ATF has restricted American access to regulated weapons. This lack of access ultimately affects their ability to safeguard themselves, their families, and their possessions,” the lawmakers articulated.
“As ATF’s Acting Director, you have considerable authority to suggest or determine which positions should be classified as “exceptions” during funding interruptions, in line with the Department of Justice’s contingency strategies and relevant legal frameworks,” they added.
Fox News Digital sought a comment from the ATF but has not yet received a reply.
