George Santos Released After Sentence Commuted by Trump
Former Representative George Santos (R-N.Y.), who faced significant scandals, was released from prison on Friday after President Trump commuted his sentence of 87 months for wire fraud and identity theft.
The 37-year-old Santos walked out of FCI Fairton, a medium-security facility in Fairfield Township, New Jersey, shortly before midnight. His attorney, Joseph Murray, shared that Santos only served around 84 days of his sentence, which had originally been imposed in April.
Initially, Santos was handed a 20-year sentence but managed to negotiate a plea deal just days before his trial on numerous charges involving inflated campaign finances.
In a heartfelt plea to Trump, Santos described his prison experience as “unlike anything most Americans can ever understand.” He characterized the conditions he faced while in solitary confinement, including being in a small cell 24/7 with limited communication with family.
Santos implored Trump for “understanding and compassion,” emphasizing his loyalty as a lifelong Republican and supporter of the president. His written appeal to Trump noted that he had been living in complete isolation after receiving death threats that are currently under FBI investigation.
He lamented the severity of his punishment, asserting, “I take full responsibility for my actions. But no one deserves to be buried in the system and endure punishment beyond what’s fair.” In addition, he acknowledged his past errors but expressed a desire for justice and a chance to rebuild his life.
In August, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) also advocated for Santos, labeling the punishment as excessive. After the commutation, she publicly thanked Trump for his decision, claiming Santos had been treated unjustly with harsh solitary confinement.
Ed Martin, a Justice Department attorney involved with the pardon process, remarked on Trump’s friendship with Santos, stating that the former president showed generosity in commuting the sentence. He expressed gratitude for playing a role in the decision.
Meanwhile, Santos faced criticism from political opponents, with some alleging that Trump’s actions were part of a broader pattern of favoritism for Republicans amid serious allegations of misconduct. Robert Zimmerman, who Santos defeated in the 2022 election, voiced concern over the implications of such a decision and called it an affront to the rule of law.
In December 2023, Santos was expelled from Congress following revelations about misusing campaign funds for personal expenses, ranging from luxury travel to extravagant subscriptions. He also faced scrutiny for fabricating parts of his personal narrative, including dubious claims about his educational background and ancestry.
Trump justified his decision by suggesting that Santos had been treated poorly in prison compared to others in Congress who had committed more serious offenses. The president commented on Santos’s capacity and intelligence, wishing him luck following his release.
