Tragic Bus Crash in Brazil Claims 17 Lives

At least 17 individuals lost their lives when a passenger bus crashed into a sand embankment and overturned in northeastern Brazil, as reported by officials on Saturday.

Authorities stated that around 30 people were onboard the bus. It’s still unclear how many of the injured were hospitalized. The incident took place in Saloa, located in the state of Pernambuco, while the bus was en route to Brumado in the neighboring state of Bahia.

According to police, the driver lost control, swerved into oncoming traffic, and struck a rock near the roadway. After that, the driver managed to steer back into the correct lane, but the bus ended up colliding with dirt and ultimately overturned.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing. Police noted that the driver sustained minor injuries and tested negative for alcohol.

Bahia Governor Jeronimo Teixeira expressed his support for rescue efforts and the identification of victims through a social media program. He conveyed his condolences, stating, “My team and I are closely monitoring the situation and deeply mourn the loss of life, injuries, and suffering of all families involved.”

The Ministry of Transport has projected that over 10,000 people will die in traffic accidents in Brazil during 2024.

Earlier incidents in Brazil include a bus overturning in April that resulted in the deaths of 11 individuals, including two children. Moreover, in February, a bus carrying university students collided with a truck in São Paulo, leading to the deaths of 12 passengers.

Additionally, last September, a bus carrying the Coritiba Crocodiles soccer team overturned, killing three people. The team has since sought inspiration from the NFL for their recovery efforts.
