Amy Duggar King Reflects on Family Trauma in New Memoir

Amy Duggar King has opened up about her unsettling encounter with her cousin, Josh Duggar, in her recent book titled “Holy Disruptor.” The book dives deeper than her reality TV roots, sharing her insights on growing up in a prominent Arkansas family and the fallout from scandals that tarnished their public image.

Back in 2015, TLC pulled the plug on the show “19 Kids and Counting” after allegations surfaced that Josh, 37, had sexually abused multiple younger siblings and another individual. Not long after this revelation, Amy, now 39, confronted her cousin in a quest for clarity.

Amy described her feelings during the confrontation: “He was very passive and unresponsive.” She recalled how he avoided eye contact, which only added to her anger. “I was furious, red-faced and crying, my heart just pounding in my chest,” she said. When he finally made eye contact, he told her directly, “I knew better,” leaving her with an unsettling impression of his demeanor.

Authorities launched an investigation into the abuse following a tip from a family friend, but ultimately concluded that the statute of limitations had run out on any charges against Josh.

In her memoir, she detailed the chilling smile Josh gave her—a twisted expression that, she felt, hinted at a deeper chaos and suffering embedded within their family dynamics. Just as tensions escalated, Amy’s uncle, Jim Bob Duggar, interrupted and dismissed her concerns with condescension, further igniting her frustration. “His son was a predator, but he was still more concerned about my language and tone of voice,” she reflected.

After the scandal became public, Josh resigned from his position as a lobbyist for the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian organization. As time passed, Amy noted how deeply this event impacted her, particularly in how she approaches parenting today. She expressed a desire for her son to be aware of boundaries and what constitutes abuse, emphasizing the importance of educating children on such serious matters early on.

“It was heartbreaking and extremely painful,” she commented, reflecting on what occurred. “But I can’t speculate on my uncle’s mindset. All I can say is that if I were in his shoes, I would approach parenting differently.” In an interesting twist, she revealed that she and her mother were completely unaware of the allegations until they made headlines, leaving them blindsided.

Throughout the years, her relationship with her cousins has been strained, yet she remains hopeful for reconciliation. “For me, boundaries are important. I don’t love them any less, but we’ve needed to distance ourselves for our own peace,” she explained. She expressed a desire for her cousins to question their upbringing and consider different perspectives on life. “If they feel the same way, I’m always here for them,” she added.

Amy’s journey illustrates the complexities of family loyalty, trauma, and personal growth, as she navigates this tumultuous path in the shadow of her family’s history.
