California's Most Progressive Lawmaker, Scott Wiener, is Set to Run Against Pelosi for Congress

Pelosi Faces Increased Pressure in Upcoming Primaries

Pelosi, 85, has yet to announce her intentions regarding the 2026 election. Recently, Mr. Weiner’s unexpected entry into the race comes as Ms. Pelosi confronts a surprisingly strong primary challenger, Saikat Chakrabarti. Chakrabarti, a wealthy former tech executive, previously worked as chief of staff for New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Mr. Weiner’s candidacy could disrupt the current dynamics within the Democratic Party and exacerbate tensions between the party establishment, which includes Pelosi’s loyal supporters and major donors, and the younger activists backing both Wiener, 55, and Chakrabarti.

Mr. Weiner is known for some controversial legislation originating from Sacramento. His notable actions include a mask ban that raised constitutional concerns, a bill that would permit high-rise development near transportation hubs by overriding local zoning laws, and a law decriminalizing loitering, which reportedly led to increased child exploitation before being repealed. Additionally, he supported laws that categorized California as a “transgender sanctuary state” and revised penalties for certain statutory offenses involving minors.

Weiner also had a public feud with the late conservative figure Charlie Kirk, frequently labeling President Donald Trump as a “fascist,” which continued even after Kirk’s assassination and the fallout affecting Trump’s associates.

Interestingly, the only area where Mr. Weiner diverges from the far left is his stance on Israel, where he defends the nation’s right to exist against an increasingly vocal anti-Israel sentiment from some within his activist base.

Chakrabarti, after leaving AOC’s office, faced criticism for his remarks comparing the Congressional Black Caucus to racists, along with scrutiny over his involvement with the political action committee.

Though Pelosi recently stepped back as House Speaker in 2022, she has not disclosed any plans for retirement. However, the emergence of two challengers with strong fundraising capabilities might pressure her to consider stepping aside.

Conversely, she may regard this situation as an opportunity to mediate between two radical factions and uphold the traditional liberal establishment she has supported in San Francisco, especially seen in recent recall elections and last year’s mayoral race.
