George Santos thanks Trump for reducing his sentence: ‘I will always be grateful’

George Santos Thanks Trump for Commutation

Former Congressman George Santos, who represented New York, expressed his heartfelt thanks for the commutation of his seven-year sentence by President Donald Trump. In his remarks, Santos highlighted Trump’s “kindness, humanity and generosity.”

Santos is currently serving time in New Jersey for charges including wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, which resulted in his expulsion from Congress in 2023.

He had previously acknowledged misusing campaign funds for personal use, falsely claiming wealth while collecting unemployment benefits, and deceiving political donors.

Trump made the announcement on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating that while Santos had made mistakes, many individuals deserving punishment received less in terms of sentencing.

Trump noted, “George Santos was a thug in some ways,…but there are many thugs in our country who shouldn’t be sentenced to seven years in prison.” He also mentioned Santos’s courage and commitment to Republican values.

He added that Santos had endured solitary confinement and significant abuse, leading to the decision to commute his sentence, wishing him “good luck” as he reenters society.

In a post the following day, Santos conveyed his gratitude, referring to the opportunity as a “real second chance at life,” expressing enthusiasm for personal growth and transformation.

He took a moment to thank Jesus Christ for his support during tough times, recognizing his imperfections but celebrating his enduring faith.

Santos expressed appreciation for Trump’s compassionate leadership, describing their private conversation as memorable and impactful, emphasizing the importance of redemption and the concept of a second chance in America.

He shared his plans to focus on prison reform, feeling inspired by Trump’s peace initiatives in the Middle East.

He said, “I am committed to doing good work that builds bridges, not walls,” underscoring the need for accountability and respect for the dignity of all individuals in the justice system.

Santos concluded with a commitment to pursue meaningful change, reflecting on his lessons learned during his time in prison. He noted that he is returning with purpose, ready to make a positive impact and advocate for rehabilitation.
