Metal Fragments from Explosive Device Strike CHP Vehicle in California
On Saturday, metal fragments from an “explosive device” that detonated prematurely struck a law enforcement vehicle in California. This occurred during an event attended by Vice President J.D. Vance.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed the details in a press release. The incident took place near Camp Pendleton, a Marine Corps base located in San Diego County.
At the time, CHP officers were managing a road closure along Interstate 5, coinciding with Vance’s visit to Camp Pendleton. He was there to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps.
The exact timing of the incident remains unclear. CHP stated that it happened “during an uncommon U.S. Marine Corps live-fire training demonstration on the highway,” along with a traffic stop the CHP initiated during this live-fire session.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. Following the occurrence, CHP officials notified Marines, who then concluded the live fire on the highway.
CHP Border Director Tony Coronado referred to the situation as “unusual and alarming.” He noted, “It’s very unusual for live fire and explosive training to take place on an active highway.” Coronado emphasized his respect for the military, yet he highlighted that public safety is his foremost responsibility.
Following the incident, CHP prepared an internal report recommending further reviews of planning, communication, and coordination among federal, state, and local entities for future events held near public roadways.
Officials at Camp Pendleton confirmed that an investigation is ongoing after a 155mm shell reportedly exploded outside the intended target zone.
A spokesperson for the Marine Corps confirmed they were aware that a 155mm artillery shell might have detonated in mid-air during the amphibious demonstration on October 18. They insisted that thorough safety measures had been in place and that firing had been paused without any injuries reported. They also committed to investigating the root cause of the incident for future missions.
California Governor Gavin Newsom took to social media to criticize the situation, suggesting that Vance and former President Donald Trump were “risking their lives to put on a show,” and urged for the government to be opened to properly honor the military.
Vance’s office has been contacted for further comment.
