Houston's Democratic mayor criticizes Mamdani, stating they are in 'different worlds'

Houston Mayor Critiques New York Mayoral Candidate

During a recent interview, Houston’s Democratic Mayor John Whitmire didn’t hold back while discussing Zoran Mamdani, the frontrunner in the New York mayoral race. He suggested that their worlds are quite different.

Whitmire pointed out that Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist, has a “terrible history of bringing people together.” He questioned Mamdani’s strategy, asking, “Is he saying he’s going to arrest the Israeli prime minister? Does he think that’s how he’ll unite people? He and I are in different worlds.”

Mamdani had stated he would direct police to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he visit New York City.

“It is crucial that New York City adheres to international criminal law,” Mamdani explained last week. Netanyahu currently faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) over alleged war crimes in Gaza, although the U.S. does not recognize the ICC’s authority.

A recent Fox News poll revealed that 49% of registered voters support Mamdani, while 28% back independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, and 13% favor Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

Whitmire also shared his views on the Democratic Party’s approach towards President Trump, expressing skepticism about their confrontational tactics. He noted, “Sometimes the louder you speak, the fewer people will listen. I won’t react to Mr. Trump. It could backfire.” He acknowledged his personal feelings but questioned why one would want to challenge Trump in the first place.

In defending Houston’s situation, Whitmire emphasized that while other cities might be in chaos, “we are not like that.”

He also took aim at Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for their interactions with Trump, suggesting their approaches might not be effective.
