New information has come to light regarding the unexpected death of former Buccaneers running back Doug Martin, with reports indicating he passed away while in police custody.

Martin, who was just 36, died early Saturday morning after being taken to a hospital in Oakland, California. This followed a police response to a reported home invasion around 4:15 a.m. ET.

According to police, they arrived at a residence near the Oakland Zoo, but found the suspect already experiencing a “medical emergency.” A “brief struggle” reportedly ensued as officers attempted to intervene.

The former NFL star is said to have resisted arrest and ultimately became unresponsive. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. The local Fox affiliate in Oakland has provided coverage on the incident.

In a statement, Martin’s family expressed their sorrow: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Doug Martin on Saturday morning.” They added that the cause of death is still unconfirmed.

The investigation into Martin’s death is ongoing, involving several law enforcement agencies.

As part of standard protocol, the police officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave.

Doug Martin was drafted 31st overall in the 2012 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and amassed a total of 5,356 rushing yards over his seven-season career.
