Sidney Sweeney Cast in Biopic About Christy Martin
Hollywood actress Sidney Sweeney is set to portray Christy Martin, the iconic lesbian boxer, in an upcoming biopic titled Christy. Despite her excitement for the role, Sweeney has faced backlash on social media from users and LGBTQ+ advocates, who have criticized the decision to cast her—a non-lesbian—in the leading part.
The film tells the story of Christy Martin, who came out as gay in high school and ultimately captured the WBC women’s super welterweight title in 2009, all while living in secrecy about her sexuality in West Virginia.
Scheduled for release on November 7th, Sweeney’s transformation for the role is quite striking. She gained 30 pounds, underwent boxing training, and even cut and dyed her long blonde hair to fit the character better.
Interestingly, during promotional discussions, Sweeney expressed to a queer outlet that she hopes the movie would “open doors for other people,” suggesting a desire for broader representation.
As production progressed, Sweeney mentioned how Christy Martin’s journey inspired her. “She has faced many challenges both in and out of the ring. I was struck and inspired by her strength and perseverance,” she stated. Playing such a complex character excited her: “It’s a dream as an actor to have a character that has so many layers and depth,” she added, noting her background in kickboxing and love for athleticism.
However, many within the queer community have voiced their disappointment over her casting. One fan lamented, “I wish they had cast a lesbian woman who has lived this kind of experience instead of casting women who often cater to young male viewers. This choice makes no logical sense.” Another commenter expressed frustration, simply stating, “Wait, she’s not for us.” One person provocatively questioned, “How about lesbians playing lesbians?”
Some fans even brought politics into the discussion, arguing against casting a straight actress in a queer role. Despite this controversy, real-life lesbian boxers have shown enthusiasm for the film and Sweeney’s performance. Christy Martin has actively promoted the movie on her social media, encouraging fans to support it.
