Ukraine and the United States are on the verge of finalizing a significant agreement that will provide Kyiv with 25 Patriot air defense systems. This was announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Sunday, emphasizing the enhancement of Ukraine’s military capabilities to counter Russian air assaults.
“The main issue is about production order, specifically concerning the countries that have signed the necessary contracts. We expect to receive these 25 systems in varying quantities over the next few years,” Zelenskyy explained to reporters in Kyiv, according to several news sources.
The Patriot system comprises a launcher, a missile, and a radar, and its price tag is around $1 billion. It’s one of the few defense tools effective against Russian ballistic missiles, which is crucial as Russia continues its aerial bombardment of Ukraine.
However, Ukraine won’t get all the systems at once, as delivery will depend on when other nations receive their own defense systems.
On Monday, Zelensky mentioned ongoing efforts with the United States to “ensure that Ukraine acquires the necessary number of Patriot systems.” He acknowledged the complexity of this task but reinforced its importance for Ukraine’s long-term security.
This long-term agreement follows Zelensky’s recent visit to Washington, where he met with President Trump. Reports indicate that their discussions were at times tense, focusing on potential ways to conclude the Russia-Ukraine conflict. During his stay in the U.S., Zelensky also connected with leading American defense manufacturers, including Raytheon, the maker of the Patriot system.
Earlier this year, Germany provided two Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine as part of the Ukraine Priority Request List, a deal signed by the U.S. government in conjunction with NATO. Since the onset of the conflict in Eastern Europe, Ukraine has reportedly been equipped with at least seven Patriot systems.
