Dre Greenlaw Suspended for Unsportsmanlike Conduct
NFL linebacker Dre Greenlaw has been handed a one-game suspension due to unsportsmanlike conduct. This decision comes after he was observed pursuing a referee following the Denver Broncos’ dramatic victory against the New York Giants on Sunday.
According to the league’s statement, “Greenlaw chased and verbally threatened referee Brad Allen as he attempted to leave the field.”
Footage shared by CBS News captured the moment, which unfolded just after Broncos kicker Will Lutz secured the winning field goal, prompting the Denver team to rush onto the field in celebration.
In the aftermath of the play, officials were attempting to restore order when Greenlaw approached the referee and was seen shouting at him.
Greenlaw continued his pursuit, yelling at the referee and even threw the yellow penalty flag, while teammate Ke Robinson tried to intervene and pull him away.
Plans are in place for Greenlaw to appeal his suspension; however, he might still face fines if the appeal is successful, as reported by the Denver Post.
Once this suspension is served, Greenlaw will be eligible to return to the roster for the game against the Texans on November 2. Unfortunately, this means he will miss the highly anticipated matchup against the Cowboys next week, which is set to air on “Monday Night Football.” Moreover, he will forfeit $192,778 in salary for the game he misses.
This season, the Broncos have a record of 5-2. Greenlaw had missed the first six weeks due to a thigh injury but made a strong return last Sunday, playing 21 snaps and delivering notable hits in the game against the Giants.
“That’s how I play the game,” Greenlaw shared. “I love hitting people. I love my job. I love what I do.”
Earlier this year, he signed a three-year deal worth $31.5 million with the Broncos.
