Pro-Hamas Attack Suspect Arrested in Louisiana
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) appeared on Sunday Briefing to address the recent arrest of a man linked to pro-Hamas activities in Louisiana. He also discussed the current ceasefire situation between Israel and Hamas, as well as the ongoing case involving George Santos.
In light of the arrest of Mahmoud Amin Yaqub al-Muftadi—who is suspected of involvement in the terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023, in Israel—Johnson and House Minority Leader Steve Scalise (also from Louisiana) expressed concerns about the implications for national security. They, alongside a group of Republican lawmakers, sent a letter to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem requesting details regarding al-Muftadi’s circumstances.
The lawmakers sought to understand how al-Muftadi settled in Lafayette, Louisiana, after entering the U.S. in 2024, particularly amidst rising illegal immigration rates during President Biden’s term. They pointed to the terrorist’s alleged false claims on his visa application, indicating serious concerns about potential threats arising from current immigration policies.
“We appreciate the efforts to keep Americans safe and want clarity on how this individual ended up in our state after entering the U.S. during a time of perceived weakness in border security,” the Louisiana Congressional Delegation noted in their letter.
The letter was also signed by other Louisiana Republicans, including Reps. Julia Letlow and Clay Higgins, and Senators John Kennedy and Bill Cassidy.
According to the Justice Department, al-Muftadi was arrested after entering the country under false pretenses on September 12, 2024. He is reportedly associated with the military wing of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a group alleged to be involved in the October attack alongside Hamas.
Documents from the case indicate al-Muftadi took immediate action in response to the attacks, arming himself and entering Israel, where he was reportedly near heavily affected communities.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding foreign nationals entering the U.S. with potential ties to terrorist groups, reflecting a broader worry that immigration policies could inadvertently enable such threats. Reports from earlier in the year also noted similar cases, including a 22-year-old with ties to Hezbollah apprehended by Border Patrol in Texas.
Efforts for clarity and response from DHS on these matters are ongoing, as lawmakers push for answers amidst rising tensions and security concerns.
