KJP Calls Democratic Push for an Open Primary to Replace Biden ‘Insulting’ to Kamala Harris

In a recent book, former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre argues that some Democrats’ push for an open primary following former President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race was disrespectful to Vice President Kamala Harris.

Jean-Pierre’s book, “The Independent: Beyond Party Lines and Inside a Broken White House,” released on Tuesday, reflects on her choice to leave the Democratic Party. In it, she contends that certain party leaders were attempting to undermine Harris by suggesting she shouldn’t be seen as a candidate aiming to take Biden’s place. She describes this as “pulling the same old trick” to weaken Harris’ position.

She notes that while many insiders believed other candidates, like California Governor Gavin Newsom, might emerge, the overarching commentary wasn’t focused solely on one person. Instead, strategic whispers in the press suggested that the party’s talent pool warranted an open convention. This, Jean-Pierre believes, was a slight against Harris.

Jean-Pierre points out that though last-minute changes before an election are rare, it’s typical for the sitting vice president to step up as a candidate when the incumbent opts out.

Biden’s exit from the race on July 21, 2024, followed mounting pressure from party figures that hurt his campaign. He ultimately withdrew after a poor debate performance, clearing the way for Harris, who was formally recognized as the Democratic candidate in early August 2024.

Jean-Pierre emphasized that Harris “was also the legitimate candidate based on the popular vote.” She highlighted their shared success on the party’s 2024 primary ballot, where they garnered a significant majority. While Harris has expressed her intention to win the nomination with Biden’s backing, Jean-Pierre notes that, as vice president, she is the logical successor and should not face a convoluted battle against ambitious governors and legislators.

Jean-Pierre further stated that it would be profoundly “disrespectful” to ignore Harris completely. She stressed the importance of recognizing the contributions of Black women, who are often overlooked despite being vital supporters of the Democratic Party.

Jean-Pierre remarked that early endorsements for Harris came from prominent party figures like the Clintons and various congressional members. However, she noted that the lack of public discussion about the primaries was mainly Biden’s doing. By quickly declaring his support for Harris, he countered attempts from within the party to weaken him. Perhaps he needed to prioritize party unity to better position himself against Trump, but when it came to his successor, Biden didn’t fully consider the sentiments of leaders like Nancy Pelosi, opting instead to make unilateral decisions.
