Baker Mayfield’s romantic journey reached a milestone when his wife, Emily, finally said yes.

Speaking with ESPN ahead of the Week 7 Monday Night Football game between the Buccaneers and the Lions, Mayfield reminisced about the early stages of their relationship. He amusingly shared how his friend helped him track down Emily, but it took a while for her to come around.

“I asked her for her number, and she said no. So, naturally, I followed her on Instagram—no follow-back,” Mayfield recounted. “It felt a bit like rejection after trying to slide into her DMs without any response. Eventually, she did give in and share her number.”

Once Emily agreed to a lunch date, both seemed to sense there was something special between them.

“He asked about my family, which made it feel less like an interview,” Emily said. “Later, I texted my mom and sister, saying, ‘Maybe I’ll marry this person.’ I just had this strange instinct.”

Mayfield shared that he had similar feelings and proposed to Emily in June 2018, just six months after they began dating.

They tied the knot in a picturesque Malibu ceremony in July 2019 as Mayfield entered his second season with the Browns, who had selected him first overall the previous year.

Although their wedding felt like a fairy tale, Mayfield’s football career took a downward turn after the 2021-22 season in Cleveland.

The Browns notably acquired quarterback Deshaun Watson, a polarizing figure due to serious allegations, to take Mayfield’s place, signing him to a jaw-dropping five-year, fully guaranteed contract in March 2022.

Mayfield’s situation became murky after being traded to the Panthers that summer, and he was eventually released in December 2022 before signing with the Buccaneers in March 2023.

In reflecting on his NFL journey, Mayfield credited Emily for her unwavering support during tough times.

“She’s been there through every low point and believed in my ability to bounce back,” said Mayfield, who is currently making a push for the MVP title this season.

Now, as parents to one-year-old daughter Koba, Emily expresses joy at the bond between Mayfield and their child.

“Baker isn’t for everyone—he can be intense on the field—yet he has a sweetness that makes me confident he’ll be a great dad,” she noted.

Despite a disappointing 24-9 loss against Detroit on Monday, Mayfield’s performance has been solid this season, with 13 touchdowns and only two interceptions, even while missing key offensive players.
