Mariska Hargitay Reveals the Correct Pronunciation of Her Name
It turns out Mariska Hargitay’s name is often mispronounced, even by those close to her. The actress known for her role as a law enforcement officer shared this during a chat on Amy Poehler’s podcast.
On the podcast, she explained that her name is pronounced “Mrish Koo.” She also mentioned that “Mariska” is actually a nickname meaning “Little Maria.” In Hungarian culture, the endings “ka” or “ke” are terms of endearment, highlighting a connection to her Hungarian and Italian heritage, specifically her grandmother.
Interestingly, even after all these years of playing Captain Olivia Benson on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” many still get it wrong. At a recent family brunch, her cousin jokingly called her “Muffrisque,” despite knowing her for decades.
When Poehler asked about the mispronunciation, Hargitay chose not to correct him. Instead, she figures it’s easier to let it go sometimes. Interestingly, on set, she often has her name spelled “Marishka” to make it easier for everyone.
It’s not just Hargitay; other celebrities, like Denzel Washington and Steve Buscemi, have also addressed the frequent mispronunciation of their names. Washington clarified that his name is pronounced “Den-Zle,” while Buscemi has humorously noted that he isn’t even sure how to say his name correctly, opting for “Bucemi” as his version.
So, if you ever find yourself catching a glimpse of Hargitay on screen, remember—it’s “Mrish Koo.” It might just make your day to say it right!
