Bernie Sanders Stands by Graham Platner Amid Tattoo Controversy
Independent Senator from Vermont, Bernie Sanders, is firmly supporting Democratic candidate Graham Platner from Maine, even after concerns were raised about a tattoo on Platner’s chest that some believe resembles Nazi symbols.
Platner has denied any connection between his tattoo and Nazism, though it does bear a resemblance to the German SS emblem. Sanders has emerged as Platner’s most notable supporter shortly after he announced his campaign to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins. “Here’s a young man who has served his country in Afghanistan and Iraq. He’s experienced some incredibly tough situations, including the loss of friends,” Sanders remarked to reporters on Tuesday. “I personally believe he’s a strong candidate, and I’m excited to support him as he aims for the Senate seat in Maine.”
The lawmaker expressed his frustration over the current political funding system, emphasizing the need for more candidates who are willing to advocate for the working class.
Sanders has not yet responded to requests for further comment regarding these developments.
The disclosure of Platner’s tattoos coincided with the surfacing of a Reddit post where he appeared to endorse violence as a tool for societal change. In that post, he suggested anyone hoping to combat fascism should come prepared with a well-equipped firearm.
Additionally, Platner faced backlash for questionable remarks on Reddit, including a comment regarding tipping, as well as statements related to sexual assault that implied victims should take responsibility for their situations. After the uproar, Platner issued an apology for his earlier comments, claiming they were made during a tumultuous time in his life.
In a statement, he explained, “I was navigating my way through the internet during a period of confusion and disillusionment with the government that sent me to war. I made some foolish comments and participated in heated discussions. Yet, I am definitely not a socialist. I’m a business owner, a Marine Corps veteran, and someone who once engaged in online antics.”
Sanders has actively supported Platner’s campaign since its launch, highlighting his commitment to this rising political figure. Platner is running against Collins in the Senate primary, facing competition from Maine’s Democratic Governor, Janet Mills, who has recently started her own candidacy.
