Jets Coach Aaron Glenn’s Support Despite Struggles
Aaron Glenn has returned to the New York Jets, the team where he began his playing career, now taking on his first role as a head coach in the NFL.
Despite the team’s tough start with an 0-7 record, Jets owner Woody Johnson remains supportive of Glenn. However, it seems his confidence doesn’t quite extend to quarterback Justin Fields.
“Apparently, some things are turning around,” Johnson mentioned during the NFL’s fall owners meeting.
In a recent game against the Carolina Panthers, Glenn benched Fields, opting for veteran Tyrod Taylor at halftime. It’s still unclear who will lead the team in their upcoming Week 8 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Johnson expressed disappointment with some of Fields’ performance statistics. “It’s tough having a quarterback with our rating. He’s got the talent, but something isn’t quite right. If you see a quarterback struggling, you’ll likely see similar results across the league. Consistency is key at that position, and that’s our goal for the rest of the season.”
Fields has played six games this season, missing one due to concussion protocols, and has recorded a passer rating of 91.1. Johnson, while hinting at some optimism, acknowledged, “You don’t win with hope, but it helps.”
He also emphasized that decisions regarding the quarterback situation would be left to the coaching staff, stating that Glenn would make the best calls based on available information.
Johnson has known Glenn for almost 30 years and reaffirmed his trust in him, saying, “I believe in Aaron. I see how he engages with players. If I were in their shoes, I’d respond to him. There’s no nonsense, just honesty. Often, players struggle to grasp the truth amidst the noise.”
The NFL trade deadline, just around the corner on November 4th, could see the Jets looking to make adjustments. Johnson indicated that the front office would evaluate all possibilities. “We’re always exploring our options; I’m always tuned in to the football landscape.”
