Cam Thomas Faces Uncertain Future with Nets

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Even though Cam Thomas is the top returning scorer for the Nets, his future in Brooklyn remains unclear.

He’s set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, entering what many call a walk year, after not securing a long-term deal with the team.

However, as the season kicks off with the Nets facing the Hornets in Charlotte on Wednesday, Thomas expressed that he isn’t stressing about his contract situation. He emphasized that it’s easy for him to focus on playing. “It will sort itself out,” he said, adding, “The main goal is to get on the court and play. I love to hoop, I love to play—that’s what matters most to me this year. Whatever happens, happens.”

Last season, Thomas led the Nets in scoring, but a hamstring injury limited him to just 25 games.

He showed up thinner at training camp, though he clarified that it was merely for aesthetic reasons, not injury-related. “It’s the same for how I feel, but the look is different. Obviously, losing weight can make you a bit faster. I felt faster last year, and this year, I think I might feel the same,” he said, adding that he felt good and ready for the season.

In the preseason, Thomas didn’t quite hit his usual marks—averaging 13.3 points with a shooting percentage of just 39% overall and a disappointing 15.4% from beyond the arc.

With the addition of Michael Porter Jr., Coach Jordi Fernandez has instilled confidence in Thomas and Porter, viewing them as key offensive players. “We’re doing what the team needs right now. There’s a lot to figure out at the start of the season,” Fernandez stated, pointing out Porter’s recent performance with 20 points and 10 three-pointers. “I want him to be aggressive; I know it will click for him,” he added, expressing overall satisfaction with the team’s efforts on both ends of the court.

Going into the opener against the Hornets, the Nets are healthy, with most players available, aside from Haywood Highsmith dealing with a knee issue.
