Greene Critiques GOP’s Support for Cuomo
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) expressed her discontent on Tuesday regarding some Republicans advocating for independent New York mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo over the party’s nominee, Curtis Sliwa.
In a post on X, Greene remarked, “I’m amazed at how many Republicans have suddenly forgotten or just don’t care that Mr. Cuomo put Covid patients in nursing homes, killed elderly people in nursing homes, and instituted the craziest Covid lockdown in the country!”
She continued, “But now they are suggesting that the New York Republican mayoral candidate should step aside so Cuomo, a literal corona communist, can regain the mayoralty.”
While she didn’t specify which Republicans she was referring to, billionaires Bill Ackman and John Catsimatidis have called on Sliwa to bow out of the race.
Greene added, “I can’t even imagine how my mom or dad got murdered in a nursing home in New York because Andrew Cuomo put coronavirus patients in nursing homes and expected me to vote for him. Are you kidding me?”
This situation arose from a report released by New York State Attorney General Letitia James. The 2021 report cited that Cuomo underestimated COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes by more than 50 percent after mandating the admission of all “medically stable” seniors.
Moreover, the Justice Department has initiated an investigation into Cuomo’s congressional testimony regarding nursing homes during the pandemic, as reported by various outlets in May.
Cuomo’s spokesperson denied any misconduct, stating that his policies aligned with federal guidelines and accusing Greene of misleading claims.
“She doesn’t care about the future of New York City… Clearly, she’s just one of the many national Republicans eager for a pro-defunding the police, pro-prostitution, pro-prison abolition socialist to represent the Democratic Party,” said Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi.
Recent polls indicate that Democratic candidate Zoran Mamdani is leading Cuomo significantly among New York City voters. Mamdani, identifying as a democratic socialist, is campaigning on initiatives like a rent freeze, free buses, and free childcare. His proposed policies have attracted criticism from President Trump and Republican supporters, who acknowledge Cuomo’s extensive experience as a potential advantage.
