Sales of Hamburger Helper rise as Americans cut back on meal expenses

Shoppers Opt for Affordable Meals Amid Rising Food Prices

As food prices keep climbing and many Americans feel uneasy about their economic prospects, more shoppers are turning back to affordable, familiar meal options.

Eagle Foods, based in Cleveland, Ohio, reported that sales of their Hamburger Helper products rose by 14.5% in August compared to the same month last year.

Since it hit the market in 1971, the Cheesy Hamburger Helper Meal Kit has been a popular choice for those looking to prepare quick and budget-friendly meals using ground meat.

The company has noted a rise in consumer interest lately, driven largely by inflationary pressures and tighter household budgets.

Mara Wiedemann, Eagle Foods’ executive vice president, remarked that the brand is experiencing a “resurgence of blockbuster products.”

“As was true back in 1971, our brand addresses consumers’ needs for convenience, bold flavors, and affordability, especially during times of high inflation, rising beef prices, fears of unemployment, and the increasing demands on dual-income families,” Wiedemann said.

Consumer finance advocate Courtney Alleb from Intuit Credit Karma commented that the brand’s comeback highlights how shoppers are adjusting to the rising costs of groceries.

“When families’ budgets are tight, they often seek out filling meals that still provide comfort,” Alev explained.

She pointed out that even small adjustments in spending, like opting for economical home-cooked meals over takeout, reveal how households are feeling the pressure financially.

According to data from Credit Karma, a substantial 77% of Americans noted the steepest food price increases they’ve faced in recent times.

Alev highlighted that the rise in “stretch meals,” designed to maximize grocery purchases, is a clear indication of the financial strain consumers are under.

“Families are getting creative and prioritizing meals that save money while still offering comfort,” she noted.

She further remarked that food often becomes the first area where people feel economic strain, as it’s a fundamental need and constitutes a significant part of most household budgets. It’s also subject to fluctuations based on broader economic conditions.

She suggested that for those aiming to save more, preparing meals and shopping lists in advance can help prevent impulse buys.

Alev advised checking local advertisements and store apps for deals, as this can significantly impact spending.

“Sticking to a shopping list and focusing on versatile, affordable, and seasonal ingredients can make a real difference and help alleviate the stress at checkout,” she added.

Ultimately, Alev concluded that the popularity of affordable meals like Hamburger Helper can enable families to maintain comforting routines, despite tough financial conditions.

“This is a small but powerful indicator that Americans are adapting, seeking ways to navigate economic challenges while preserving their lifestyle and quality of life,” she observed.
