Jay Jones Being Investigated For Possible Court Lying

Virginia Attorney General Candidate Under Investigation

Jay Jones, a Democratic candidate for Virginia Attorney General, is reportedly facing an investigation for allegedly providing false information about his community service in New Kent County court.

The inquiry was triggered by claims that Jones misrepresented his community service hours linked to a reckless driving conviction, according to reports. Scott Rennick, the Commonwealth’s Attorney for New Kent County, sought to remove himself from the investigation due to potential conflicts of interest, and his request was approved by Judge Elliott Bondurant. U.S. Attorney Nathan Green has been appointed as the special prosecutor for this case.

Jones was convicted of reckless driving in 2022 after being caught driving at 116 mph. He was fined $1,500 and mandated to complete 1,000 hours of community service. Reports indicate that he stated he completed 500 hours for his political action committee, Meet Our Moment (MOM), and logged the other 500 hours for the NAACP Virginia State Conference.

Rennick mentioned that, under state guidelines, community service should be “unpaid service or labor performed through a non-political, charitable nonprofit organization.”

Certification documents from both the NAACP and MOM reportedly confirm that Jones fulfilled over 500 hours of service with each organization in 2023. To substantiate his claims within a year, he would need to dedicate roughly 10 hours weekly to each organization while maintaining a full-time job at Hogan Lovells.

During this timeframe, social media activities allegedly showed Jones campaigning for other Democratic candidates across Virginia.

Rennick expressed concern regarding the time logged for MOM, emphasizing that community service should genuinely benefit the community. Meanwhile, Virginia’s Republican Attorney General, Jason Miyares, criticized the situation in a statement on social media, stating it would be impossible for Jones to fulfill his duties amid an ongoing public criminal investigation and urged him to withdraw from the election.
