Election Fund Starts Ad Campaign Showing Microsoft's Censorship and Interference in Elections

Fair Elections Fund Launches Campaign Against Microsoft

The Fair Elections Fund (FEF) has initiated a digital advertising campaign aimed at highlighting Microsoft’s role in suppressing free speech and its influence on elections in the U.S.

In a recent statement, FEF expressed concerns about Microsoft’s history of censoring conservative viewpoints and colluding with foreign rivals, emphasizing the need for immediate scrutiny. They described the campaign as a necessary alert to lawmakers in Washington to hold bad actors accountable and to protect the integrity of the electoral process in the future.

FEF’s campaign, which involves a significant investment in digital advertising, draws attention to Microsoft’s ongoing political bias and reported national security risks, and it urges regulatory bodies to investigate the company’s actions.

The report by FEF appears to be motivated by the recent actions of FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, who has aggressively challenged censorship practices among major tech firms. Ferguson has highlighted how these companies manipulate free speech and impact electoral processes.

Moreover, FEF pointed out that Bill Gates contributed $50 million to Future Forward USA Action, a group they categorize as “dark money,” ahead of Kamala Harris’ re-election campaign in 2024. Additionally, Microsoft President Brad Smith and his spouse hosted a fundraiser for the Biden Victory Fund.

Interestingly, Smith remarked to European journalists that there are “better places to be,” referring to the World Economic Forum, while many other tech executives were attending President Trump’s second inauguration.

In the lead-up to this inauguration, Microsoft had cautioned that as other firms distanced themselves from controversial corporate policies, they had risen above the “era of polarization,” reiterating their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

FEF also noted Microsoft’s decision to terminate its relationship with a law firm that had offered pro bono support to the Trump administration, instead hiring a firm that actively opposes it.

LinkedIn co-founder and Microsoft board member Reid Hoffman has faced scrutiny for his support of left-leaning initiatives, even suggesting that Trump should resign, which came just before a failed assassination attempt aimed at the former president.

During the 2022 midterm elections, Microsoft restricted its employees from contributing to 147 Republicans, including well-known figures like Senators Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz, as well as House Speaker Mike Johnson.

FEF highlighted that while solely Republicans faced these restrictions, Democrats who contested the certification of electoral votes in previous years faced no such limitations. In fact, according to FEF, Microsoft’s PAC had donated a total of $24,000 during the 2018 and 2020 elections to members of Congress who had previously objected to the certification of the 2016 election.

Additionally, Microsoft opposed Georgia’s efforts to secure voting in the 2021 elections, raising concerns about limited access even though turnout was strong in the 2022 elections.

FEF criticized Microsoft’s partnerships with organizations like NewsGuard and Global Disinformation Index, which they argue are biased against center-right and establishment-disfavored news outlets. They cited a LinkedIn report indicating a notable rise in the removal of content deemed “misinformation” relating to the coronavirus pandemic.

Furthermore, Microsoft’s close ties with China, including sharing source code and employing Chinese engineers for federal contracts, were highlighted as potential national security threats that could endanger the integrity of election infrastructure.

In closing, FEF urged Microsoft to improve transparency, implement independent oversight, enhance privacy protections, and commit to ideological neutrality to mend its damaging impact on democracy and adhere to principles of free and fair elections.
