The Democrats' selective memory about politics

Scarborough on Political Retaliation

Joe Scarborough seems to have a renewed appreciation for the Constitution. On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” he, along with his co-hosts, expressed concern over the significant risks posed by Donald Trump potentially using government influence against his adversaries. Scarborough remarked that Trump and his associates are caught in a “vicious circle” where those engaging in politically motivated legal actions will inevitably face consequences once they leave office.

However, there’s a notable inconsistency here. This very tactic is one that Democrats have already employed.

After years of leveraging the legal system against Trump and his team, many on the left are now advocating for “restraint.” With figures like Letitia James, James Comey, and John Bolton facing charges, those who previously backed politically charged prosecutions are now voicing fears about judicial overreach. Their amnesia about past events is rather striking.

In light of the backlash, Democrats are asking for a ceasefire that they likely have no intention of honoring.

A long-standing argument against using state power for political gain states: “Avoid using this system against your opponents, or they will retaliate.” As long as both sides adhere to the same rules, this idea holds merit. But if one party goes too far, it renders the warning moot. It’s tricky to tell your opponent to refrain from responding when you’re still throwing punches.

For many years, liberal voices have kept conservative actions in check by condemning escalated responses. Republicans, often positioning themselves as proponents of limited government, usually echoed this sentiment, recognizing the inherent dangers of wielding political power. The impending threat of mutual destruction kept them in line. But that restraint vanished when Democrats began arresting protesters and indicting a president they impeached—twice.

Talks of escalation work only if both sides respect limits. Once the first act of aggression occurs, the only path to restoring order is to ensure the aggressor understands the consequences of their actions. Much like in a physical altercation, it’s hard to stop mid-fight. The longer this situation lingers, the less likely anyone will part ways amicably.

Democrats have routinely rationalized their overreach with the same tired justifications. They’ve labeled Trump a “unique threat,” a version of a dictator, drawing parallels to all the worst traits one might associate with Central America’s history. They argued that it was necessary to “make an example” to defend democracy. Deep down, they may have known they were opening a Pandora’s box. They just didn’t anticipate having to deal with the fallout.

And now, they’re facing the consequences together.

Progressives appear to recognize the risks but remain in denial. Having normalized political prosecution, they seem eager to erase the past. It’s as if the last eight years were erased from memory: no trumped-up charges against Trump, no arrested officials, no jailed protesters.

“Exercise caution if you imprison your opponents; the same could happen to you.”

This warning loses its weight when political allies find themselves imprisoned.

Initially, Democrats believed they were safe, assuming Republicans wouldn’t retaliate, relying on what they perceived as the party’s inherent passivity. For a long time, they were correct. Republicans have often shown reluctance to leverage power despite electoral victories.

But Donald Trump is not your average Republican. He holds grudges, doesn’t forget easily, and absolutely dislikes losing. If you give him the opportunity to strike back, he absolutely will.

Even as the political landscape shifts against Democrats, they haven’t learned their lesson. They maintain that the accusations against Trump are valid while labeling any pushback against them as tyranny. Their fear of “political retaliation” rings somewhat hollow now. The chain reaction they set in motion was, perhaps, unavoidable.

Having disrupted the political balance, Democrats have lost their moral authority and, feeling cornered, seem to resort to violence. Many progressives who once occupied the White House are now distrustful of the system they once vowed to defend. For years, they’ve compared Trump to Hitler, labeling his supporters as Nazis and his administration as fascist. After dehumanizing their opponents, how can they retract their aggression?

The reality is, they can’t. They take to the streets instead.

Their rhetoric has reached a point of no return. If Trump is equated with Hitler and he is reelected, then democracy itself becomes questionable. By that reasoning, acts of terror transform from crimes into forms of justice. That’s precisely the direction the left seems to be headed.

Political factions that once professed fear of tyranny are now responsible for its emergence. Those who warned against political persecution have become adept at conducting it. In response to the backlash, Democrats are now calling for an unachievable ceasefire.

They envisioned a world without limitations, and now they must deal with the reality of their choices.
